Times have certainly changed for the modern day explorer as the four corners can often be reached in amazing style these days, especially with the help of an award-winning superyacht, experienced crew and of course a gym!
In 2010 we were approached by Aquos Yachts, the company behind an exciting new-build explorer named Big Fish. Requiring help with the equipment selection and layout for the small and regulated space, the team were keen to include a gym for their future guests.
With an overall length of 45m, this cool but smaller yacht was offering an incredible itinerary from the South Pacific to the Arctic over the forthcoming months for $245,000 per week. However, realising their adventurous guests would more than likely be health-conscience too, the need for a gym was more of a necessity than a luxury.
In the early years, the gyms onboard yachts were ‘developed’ at the end of the build process…if at all. Therefore, designs were somewhat governed by the random space set aside for this afterthought.
Combine this new addition with strict emergency routes, height restrictions and storage access, together with the needs of the user, you then have to start being a little more inventive to create anything worthwhile if it is not part of the initial design.
Big Fish’s gym was always going to be small but they had this aft room set aside from the start. With fire escapes, ECR (Engine Control Room) access, electrical panels and water-tight doors, we set out to offer enough portable equipment to fill the room adequately and all within the regulations. So, whether the clients preferred exercising inside watching the TV or on deck gazing at the sunset over some French Polynesian island, they had the option.
As always, we created the virtual room whilst gaining the list of exercise likes and dislikes from the client. Combining this information with our professional suggestions, we were able to offer various equipment and layouts until all parties approved a final design. Considering three continents were involved, it was a smooth process resulting in a compact exercise space that has been enjoyed ever since.

- Concept 2 Rower
- Hampton Dumbbell Set
- Bar and Weight Plates
- TRX & Attachments in the Ceiling
- Mats & Balls
Sadly, the styling wasn’t part of our involvement so it ended up in the basic colours and stark lighting. A small amount of professional guidance should have transformed this room into something a little more motivational bearing in mind the lack of daylight and its location below deck.
The Important Six
Equipment Selection 9/10
Motivational Environment 3/10
A nice little gym for the space available, but the location was obviously not ideal. To overcome that we made sure all equipment was portable to allow it to be enjoyed on deck whilst on anchor or during passages. The interior design wasn’t there for this room compared with the rest, however, for a 45m yacht in 2010 to have a dedicated gym at all was certainly encouraging to see and we were pleased to have been involved.
